HOLODOMOR COMMEMORATION AT QUEEN'S PARK

On Thursday, November 20th, 2008, UCC -Toronto along with the staff of our Ukrainian schools and our Archbishops organized a very moving service to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Ukrainian Genocide by Famine - The Holodomor. Over 450 students (mainly grade 7 and 8) of the Toronto and Mississauga Ukrainian Catholic bilingual schools gathered at the provincial legislature at 10:30am to remember and share the story of the Holodomor with provincial officials.  Extraordinarily moving speeches as to why we need to commemorate and not forget the Holodomor were given by Hanna Haponenko from Saint Josephat's, Daniel Krutkiewicz from Saint Sofia and Cassandra Leshchyshyn from Cardinal Slipyj. The Master of ceremonies were from Saint Demetrius school.

Unfortunately, government representatives showed up only briefly to address the students and left without hearing the students eloquent presentations.  Afterwards, for those schools that were able to participate, UCC-Toronto in addition to the costs of transportation of the students to the commemorative service at Queen's park covered the transportation costs to the LUC display at Christie.

UCC Toronto is grateful for the unabated support of the School Principals and Staff of the Schools as well as the organizers of the event whose efforts made the 75th commeration of the Holodomor indelible for our youth.
