The Shevchenko Museum cordially invites you to join us for a talk on Women in the Works of Taras Shevchenko presented by Dr. Maxim Tarnawsky, Professor in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Toronto where he teaches Ukrainian literature. Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at 7pm (EST).
Taras Shevchenko (1814–1861), a poet, painter and humanist, twice celebrated by UNESCO as as a cultural leader of world acclaim, is universally recognized as one of the giants in humanity’s ceaseless struggle for freedom and justice.
Shevchenko, a former serf, was particularly sensitive to social and national oppression in Ukraine in the nineteenth century. His depictions of this injustice in his poems often focus on the plight of women and girls. Shevchenko depicted their struggle to survive injustice, discrimination, poverty, brutality, and oppression. Placing a female character at the centre of many of his works, Shevchenko not only illuminated the mistreatment, abuse, and abandonment she frequently suffered but also described, with great compassion and tenderness, her struggle to survive and maintain her dignity. His suffering female characters embody his vision of a world in which inequality and injustice dominate the social landscape.
