Ucrainica Research Institute is pleased to invite you to our upcoming lecture: The Art of War: Tangible Cultural Heritage as a Conflict Resource

The guest speaker will be Alexandra Shkandrij, a PhD student in Political Science at the University of Toronto whose research examines the intersection of art, conflict, and identity, with a particular focus on Ukraine. She investigates the conditions under which armies loot, destroy, sell, or repurpose tangible cultural property — sites, monuments, artworks, and artifacts that preserve historical memory. The lecture will explore under what conditions belligerents target military versus symbolic sites, and how their choices reflect short-term versus long-term strategic goals.
