Event Description

The Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies at the University of St. Michael’s College warmly invites you to an evening held in remembrance of our namesake, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. This event will bring together reflection, scholarship, and community in honour of the remarkable spiritual, intellectual, and cultural legacy of Metropolitan Andrey.
On Tuesday, November 25, 2025, Dr. Daniel Fedorowycz will deliver a lecture titled “Who is Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky? is the Wrong Question.”
The event will take place at the Charbonnel Lounge, University of St. Michael’s College, 81 St. Mary Street, Toronto. A reception will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the lecture, and the evening will conclude with Small Compline in the Sheptytsky Institute’s onsite chapel, St. Sophia.
Dr. Fedorowycz, Research Associate at the Public History Lab, Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, will explore and clarify the political and social thought of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky through his many encyclicals, offering new insight into his enduring witness to faith, leadership, and moral clarity. Dr. Fedorowycz received his DPhil in Politics from the University of Oxford and has held fellowships at Harvard, Yale, the University of Toronto, and the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. His research focuses on twentieth-century European state-building, repression, and interethnic violence, and his work has appeared in Comparative Politics, Democratization, East European Politics and Societies, Nationalities Papers, and East European Jewish Affairs.
In conjunction with this lecture, we will also celebrate the public launch of War, Peace, and Truth: His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk and Professor Timothy Snyder in Conversation. This new publication is a transcribed edition of the February 2025 dialogue between Archbishop Shevchuk, Patriarch Sviatoslav of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church—successor to Metropolitan Andrey—and historian Timothy Snyder, held at the University of Toronto. Copies of the book will be available at the event.
All are warmly invited to join us as we remember Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky and reflect on the living significance of his thought and example. We hope to see you on November 25th.
