Monday, June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day - in Canada and the Ukrainian Canadian Community welcomes the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers fine initiative to honour our mutual historic heritage in Canada. OMNI Television has agreed to broadcast in Ontario, BC and Alberta the performance version of the very unique production of Shumka’s Ancestors & Elders on

Two cultures. Different legacies. New connections.Shumka presents Ancestors & Elders… exploring the power of tradition and truth. In a world premiere production featuring a cast of Shumka Dancers and multidisciplinary Indigenous artists, we share a story of the first Ukrainian newcomers to Canada, exploring the shared values and respected differences between these hopeful settlers and the First Nations people they encounter in a new land.

In addition to the concert performance on OMNI - KONTAKT Ukr TV Network will present a documentary - Dancing on Eggshells, from June 17 - 23, on the making of Shumka’s Ancestors & Elders.
The documentary follows the production Co-Directors: Indigenous theatre artist Barry Bilinsky and Shumka choreographer and dancer Joseph Hoffman. The documentary focuses on the artists’ creative process as they navigate the difficulties of uniting their respective cultural stories through dance while dancing around 150 years of cultural baggage.
