Marichka Marczyk is a singer with the Ukrainian Canadian Balaklava Blues and Lemon Bucket Orkestra, an ethnomusicologist and an author of the “Folk Songs of Ukraine” online encyclopedia, which includes authentic traditional Ukrainian songs collected through folklore expeditions in Ukrainian villages in the course of over 20 years.
Open Voice is one of the world’s oldest singing styles in Central and Eastern Europe. Ukraine has a uniquely rich tradition of Open Voice singing. This singing style developed over the centuries in the plains of Eastern and Central Ukraine and was believed to have magic powers.
