House Statement for the Hon. Monte McNaughton
On Thursday February 23rd, the eve of the tragic one year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Hon. Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development stood in the Provincial Legislature and delivered a lengthy House Statement condemning Russia’s “brutal, unprovoked war of aggression” and demanding an end to the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine.
McNaughton reminded Members of Provincial Parliament, that it was almost a decade ago, in February 2014, that Putin ordered the invasion and annexation of Crimea, before moving into the Donbas region. But, he said as history has shown so often, an aggressor is never satisfied. He said “Putin will not stop until and unless someone stops him.”
McNaughton spoke of Russian atrocities, mass graves and “the real genocidal intent of Putin’s war”. He also spoke of the “astounding bravery of Ukraine’s resistance”, the sacrifice, heroism and continued struggle of Ukrainians to free their homeland.
He told MPP’s that Ontario has welcomed more than 60,000 displaced Ukrainians with open arms and assured them that the Ford Government will continue to stand with the people of Ukraine and support them in their struggle until their dream of peace is achieved (see full text attached).
This was one of those rare occasions where the main political parties were all in agreement. Liberal MPP Mary-Margaret McMahon and NDP MPP Bhutila Karpoche also rose in the House. They denounced Russia’s military aggression and affirmed the government’s statement.
Consul General of Ukraine in Toronto Oleksandr Shevchenko was present in the Chamber during the remarks. He was joined by Luba Slavatynska from UCC Ontario Provincial Council, Alicia Markson, UCC Toronto Stand with Ukraine Committee member and Teresa Lubinski, TCDSB Trustee Ward 4. Markham-Thornhill’s Logan Kanapathi was one of many MPP’s who approached the group to offer support.
